Hitachi Systems Hall in Sendai city, Miyagi prefecture
Students :
Fifteen first and second grade SSH participants

Three groups from Aizu Gakuho joined the Science Community Meeting and Presentation Contest. In this event, groups from 18 high schools all around the Tohoku area presented their research. Through giving each other feedback and comments, students and teachers try to improve their research every year.
On January 24, the chemistry group from Aizu Gakuho presented about photocatalysts. The next day, the geometry group presented their research with their posters about the effect on weather brought by Inawashiro Lake. The biology group also presented about the intestinal environment of pill bugs. After the presentation session, students from all over Tohoku talked in small groups about their research and study. Gaining feedback from students and teachers in other schools, students had an opportunity to look back on their research.

1st year high school students who chose SSH course participated in the program called “Egg-Drop”. The purpose of this program was to learn excitement of scientific research. Students learned it through the competition, the verification of hypothesis and the examination using their flexible thoughts. In “Egg-Drop”, they were tested on their machine to protect eggs from breaking. Students were only able to use drawing paper, paste, and scissors. The contest’s standard for screening is dropping time, weight, and distance from target.

The participants were tested on their abilities to make use of their knowledge of science and apply it to think of solutions on issues related to science, mathematics and computer science. Issues beyond the general curriculum were presented.

(2) The practical skill section (360 points: 180 points for an experiment section, and 180 points for a practical skill section)
The participants competed using their creativity and communication ability, and made great use of their ability to experiment, practice and consider the topics of science, mathematics and computer science.

(a) Experiment section
Participants completed using their ability to observe and carry out experiments on the scientific topic. (The details were announced on the day of the competition.)

(b) Integrated skills section
Participants were tested on their demonstration and reports on the scientific topic.(This year’s topic was Pon-pon sen, which was the ship moved by vapor.)

SSH Field Work in 2018

Date :
June 9,2018
Place :
Tadami Town
Students :
Thirty-five 1st grade SSH participants

1st year Gakuho high school students visited two beech forests in Tadami Town (Iyashino-mori and Agarikono-mori). The guides and instructors for the trip were Nikkuni Isamu, Watanabe Kazuko and Takahara Yutaka. Mr. Nikkuni is the chief of the beech center in Tadami Town. He taught to students before their trip to the forests. Ms. Watanabe and Mr. Takahara are authorized instructors of the town.

The students went to Iyashino-mori in the morning. They learned about the differences between a natural forest, a secondary forest and man-made forest there. Although students learned about the forests in Mr. Nikkuni’s lecture beforehand, by walking through and noticing the differences, they were able to understand the forests better. They also visited a Gap; A characteristic opening in the branches of beech trees which brings sunlight into the forest. Fortunately, when the students went to the Gap, the sun was shining and they were able to see fantastic scenery.

After lunch, the students visited Agarikono-mori. There they saw knots in the beech trees. The knots were due to logging that had been done in the winter. Seeing how Agarikono-mori differed from Iyashino-mori, the students were able to think about the protection of the precious beech tree in terms of their sustainability.

PC Competition in 2017

Date :
November 3rd, 4th, 2017
Place :
Aizu University
Students :
Two 2nd grade SSH high school students
Preliminary :
September 9th
The final :
November 3rd-4th

Ten teams ranging from 1st year grade students to 3rd year garade students gathered at Aizu University on Nov.4th. Among the ten teams, one 2nd year team placed first in the prefectural preliminaries and moved up to main tournament. The winners of preliminaries met in one place. Teams of two created programs to solve problems under a time limit. Our students competed fiercely for four hours. Unfortunately, they were not able to achieve a first place. The students look towards next year with determination. The students felt that it was an exciting and useful learning experience. They said they are looking forward to competing next year.

The 2nd Fukushima Prefectural English Presentation Contest

Date :
November 4th, 2017
Place :
Fukushima Prefectural Education Center Large Hall
Students :
The student scheduled to attend SSH overseas training, Three 2nd grade SSH high school students

The students participated in an English presentation contest held in Fukushima city as a preliminary practice for overseas training. The students added their opinions to their presentation about their research on radiation and the revitalization effort in Fukushima. They presented in English without looking at their manuscript. The students seemed to be encouraged by the expressive power of the presentations of the other participating students’ presentations. They will also present in English at this year's Taiwanese high school exchange. So we hope the students make use of these experiences to further improve their expressive power in English.
